Justin Thomas missed FedEx Cup playoffs at Wyndham Championship, tied for 12th

Posted : 07 August 2023
Justin Thomas experienced a heart-wrenching moment on the final hole of the Wyndham Championship, narrowly missing out on securing a spot in the FedEx Cup play-offs by just one stroke.

The winner of the 2022 US PGA Championship concluded the tournament at Sedgefield Country Club tied for 12th place, finishing with a total of eleven-under.

In a gripping finale, Thomas came close to achieving a birdie on the 18th hole, sending a long-range chip that unfortunately hit the flagstick and didn't go in.

Reflecting on the shot, Thomas remarked, "It would have been a lot more incredible if it would have gone in."

As the 30-year-old settled for par on the final hole, uncertainty surrounded his fate while his competitors continued their play on the Greensboro course in North Carolina.

At the commencement of the week, Thomas was ranked 79th in the FedEx Cup standings, needing to break into the top 70 to secure a spot in the impending play-offs set to begin the following week.

Despite his efforts resulting in a tied 12th position, the two-time major champion only managed to advance to the 71st spot, trailing 70th-placed Ben Griffin by a mere eight points.

This marks the first instance since his rookie season in 2014 that Thomas will not participate in the play-offs.

While acknowledging that the game owes him nothing, Thomas expressed his sentiments, stating, "I know this game doesn't owe you anything, but I feel like I fought hard enough to deserve it."

Recalling some remarkable shots he made throughout the tournament, including a memorable eagle putt on the 15th hole and crucial up-and-down saves on the 17th and 18th holes, Thomas noted, "I did the best I could."

Thomas, who claimed the FedEx Cup title in 2017, entered the Wyndham Championship after enduring a series of challenges, including five missed cuts in his last seven starts and difficulties at this season's major tournaments, with a couple of rounds exceeding 80 strokes.

Despite the disappointment at the conclusion of this season, Thomas is maintaining hope of securing a spot on the USA's Ryder Cup team.

The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place from September 29th to October 1st at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy.
