Justin Rose leads British Masters with one-shot advantage

Posted : 30 June 2023
Justin Rose of England has taken an early lead in the British Masters, finishing the opening round with a one-shot advantage over Jamie Donaldson. Rose, ranked 31st in the world, delivered a solid performance with eight birdies and just one bogey, resulting in an impressive seven-under-par 65 at The Belfry.

Donaldson, Rose's former Ryder Cup teammate, sits one stroke behind the leader after a strong finish. The 47-year-old Welshman birdied five of the last six holes, posting a score of 66. Reflecting on his round, Rose expressed satisfaction, stating it was the cleanest golf he had played in a long time. He felt comfortable with his game right from the beginning.

Rose, a past champion of the British Masters in 2002 and the event's host in 2018, recently missed the cut at the US Open. Following a week off and limited practice, he emphasized the importance of regaining his rhythm and was pleased to start the tournament on a positive note.

Donaldson, known for securing the decisive point for Europe at Gleneagles during the 2014 Ryder Cup, currently holds a two-shot lead over Germany's Yannik Paul and English amateur John Gough. James Morrison of England, Sebastian Garcia of Spain, and Adrien Saddier of France are also positioned well at four under par.

Notably, the top three players at the British Masters who are not already exempt will earn coveted spots in the upcoming Open Championship. Donaldson, who has slipped to 310th in the world rankings, views this opportunity as a significant goal, aiming to secure his place at Royal Liverpool.
