Justice Lambo Akanbi (Rtd) is deeply committed to fostering the growth of golf not only in Kwara State but also across the nation. This resolute pledge was voiced as he ceremoniously teed-off the Emirate Global Hotel Amateur Open Tournament at the illustrious Ilorin Golf Club. Being both the sponsor and a fervent advocate for the tournament, Justice Akanbi articulated that the primary objective is to attract top golfers from all corners of Nigeria to Ilorin, thereby nurturing the advancement of the sport.

In his capacity as the sponsor of the golf tournament, Justice Akanbi assured that Emirate Global Hotel and Suite will persistently champion the development of sports, particularly in Kwara State. Reflecting on the essence of the initiative, the former Commissioner For Information and Youth Development underscored, “The idea was to bring golfers around the country to Ilorin and encourage our young Captain, Jide Allen, who has been doing everything possible to make Ilorin Golf Club alive.” This commitment emanates from Justice Akanbi’s overarching vision to bolster the sports sector in Kwara State.

Emphasizing the inclusive nature of golf, Justice Akanbi stressed that it is not solely reserved for the elite but is accessible to all individuals who harbor a passion for the sport. He reminisced on a pivotal moment in the history of golf in Kwara State when the former Head of State, General Badamosi Babaginda, inquired about the location of the golf course during his visit. This inquiry led to the revelation of the golf course's existence to the former Governor of Kwara State, General Alwali Jauji Kazir, marking a significant milestone in the sport’s development.

The Emirate Global Hotel Amateur Open Tournament 2024 has attracted a sizable contingent of 146 golfers to Ilorin, who arrived on Friday, May 10, 2024. Ahead of the tournament, the golfers convened for a pre-tournament cocktail event, acquainting themselves with the course in preparation for the impending competition across various categories. With the tournament commencing at the break of dawn, the golfers welcomed the early morning shower, which bestowed a refreshing ambiance conducive to the game.

The tournament unfolds at the esteemed 18-hole Ilorin Golf Club, serving as the pristine backdrop for the riveting displays of skill and sportsmanship. As the tournament progresses, Justice Akanbi’s unwavering dedication to nurturing golf in Kwara State and beyond remains steadfast, serving as a beacon for the sport's flourishing future in the region.
