World number one Judd Trump secured his 63rd career ranking event semi-final after a 6-3 victory over Australia's Neil Robertson at the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. This achievement highlights Trump’s incredible consistency, marking his 33rd semi-final appearance in a ranking event since 2019. Trump recently regained the top spot in the world rankings from Mark Allen following his runner-up finish at the Xi’an Grand Prix, but he faces competition from Ronnie O’Sullivan, who remains in pursuit of the number one ranking.
Neil Robertson, who is on a mission to re-establish himself among snooker’s elite, saw his run come to an end despite a commendable performance. Following a difficult 2023/24 season, which saw him drop to 27th in the world, Robertson has been steadily improving. His £50,000 prize for this week’s efforts has helped him climb to 26th in the provisional rankings as he aims to return to the top 16. Trump dominated the early frames, taking a 3-0 lead, though Robertson fought back to trail 3-1 at the mid-session interval.
After the break, Robertson displayed resilience, with breaks of 77 and 103 helping him win two out of the next three frames, closing the gap to 4-3. However, when given an opportunity to level the match in the eighth frame, Robertson faltered, allowing Trump to regain control with a break of 77. Trump then closed out the match to set up a semi-final clash with Shaun Murphy. Reflecting on the win, Trump acknowledged Robertson’s form, noting that small errors at critical moments were the difference in the match.
Shaun Murphy booked his place in the semi-finals with a 6-2 victory over Xiao Guodong. Murphy now faces Trump in a rematch of the Shanghai Masters final, where Trump prevailed 11-5. Despite that loss, Murphy believes the experience has strengthened his game, and he is eager for the challenge of facing Trump again. He recalled playing Trump during his Crucible debut and acknowledged how much his rival has developed into a formidable competitor over the years.
