Judd Trump Advances to Northern Ireland Open Semi-Finals After Dominant Win Over Shaun Murphy

Posted : 26 October 2024

Judd Trump’s impressive journey toward a fifth BetVictor Northern Ireland Open title continued with a commanding 5-1 victory over 2005 World Champion Shaun Murphy at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. Trump’s recent performance has highlighted his consistency and dominance in the 2024 season, where he has reached at least the quarter-finals in every tournament. His winnings this year have also surpassed £1.5 million, emphasizing his form as world number one.

This win marks Trump’s sixth consecutive triumph over Murphy, advancing him to the semi-finals, where he will face Elliot Slessor. In a tightly contested opening frame, Murphy initially appeared in control with a 62-point break. However, Trump managed a comeback, securing the frame with a final break of 35 and clinching the victory by a single point on the black. Murphy responded in the second frame, levelling the match with a run of 66, but Trump swiftly regained the lead and maintained momentum.

Trump’s form surged from there, as he took command with remarkable breaks of 128 and 125, winning four frames consecutively and sealing a 5-1 victory. Reflecting on his performance, Trump expressed satisfaction, acknowledging that he had played with precision from the start, despite a minor lapse in the final frame. At 35, Trump credits his success to consistent hard work and resilience, maintaining his determination to excel in each tournament regardless of previous results.

Murphy commended Trump’s performance, acknowledging the high level of consistency Trump has demonstrated. Trump appreciated the respect from his peer, noting that such praise does not come lightly from fellow competitors. He also credited the energetic Belfast crowd for their enthusiasm, sharing how their excitement fuels his desire to perform well, as he values playing in an atmosphere that resonates with his competitive spirit.

Meanwhile, Slessor earned his spot in the semi-finals with a 5-1 victory over Louis Heathcote. Having reached the semi-finals in Belfast before, Slessor remains confident about his upcoming clash with Trump. He acknowledged the pressure on Trump as a favourite, stating that while expectations favour Trump, he is undeterred and ready to challenge him. Slessor has beaten Trump before and is prepared to test his skills once more, embracing the opportunity to make his mark in the tournament.
