Josh Tarling, a Welsh rider from Ineos Grenadiers, claimed victory in stage two of the UAE Tour, securing the overall lead in the race. The 21-year-old won the 12km time trial, finishing ahead of Switzerland's Stefan Bissegger and three-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar. This victory marks Tarling's second World Tour win, having previously triumphed at the 2023 Renewi Tour.
The British time trial champion averaged an impressive speed of 56.670km/h, securing a 13-second margin over Bissegger, while Pogacar finished a further five seconds behind.
Tarling reflected on his victory, noting the difficulties he faced last year, including a series of second-place finishes in time trials against Remco Evenepoel. He expressed immense satisfaction with the win, which he described as much-needed.
With a 13-second lead going into stage three, Tarling faces a significant climbing challenge with the 19km ascent of Jebel Jais. Despite the tough conditions, Tarling is confident that his win will provide the momentum needed for the rest of the season.
His success also adds to Ineos Grenadiers' morale following Michal Kwiatkowski's victory in Spain, though the team was also hit by Egan Bernal's collarbone injury in the Clasica Jaen.
