Jordan Wessels put on an impressive display in the second round of the South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Mossel Bay Golf Club, finishing with a five-under-par 67. His strong performance gave him a three-stroke lead going into the final day.
Wessels started his round on the 10th hole and quickly made an impact, eagleing the par-five 11th. He followed that with birdies on 12 and 13, but a bogey on 14 was offset by two more birdies on 17 and 18, bringing him to the turn at five-under.
Wessels continued his solid play on the front nine, adding two more birdies to his score. However, a double-bogey on the ninth, after a pulled tee shot, slightly dampened his round. Despite this, he remained focused, finishing the day with a three-stroke advantage.
He reflected on the round, mentioning that while he had missed some opportunities, he was pleased with his overall performance. He emphasized the importance of staying composed and not getting distracted by the pressure of the lead.
In second place, Noa Auch-Roy from France carded another impressive five-under-par 67, putting him at 10-under-par, three shots behind Wessels. He was tied for second with South Africa's Logan Leisher, who also shot five-under-par, marking a bogey-free round.
Sean Paxton’s seven-under-par 65 earned him fourth place, while a group of players, including Vuyisani Makama and Christiaan Heyman, shared fifth at seven-under. Harry Watkins of Wales also posted a solid 65, with nine birdies, and was in a share of eighth place.
Wessels, who grew up playing in windy conditions at Humewood Golf Club, expressed confidence in his ability to handle the course at Mossel Bay, which he finds short and reachable with solid course management.
As he leads into the final day, he is focused on sticking to his game plan and not letting the pressure get to him. With 36 holes remaining, Wessels understands the challenge ahead and is determined to stay in the moment, aiming to secure the prestigious South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship title.
