In a dramatic turn of events at the DP World Tour’s SDC Championship in South Africa, American golfer Jordan Gumberg secured victory on the second playoff hole after local contender Robin Williams relinquished a two-shot lead on the last two holes.
Gumberg, 28, displayed composure in his final round, carding a bogey-free four under-par 68, concluding the tournament at 12 under. Williams, initially at 14 under-par, faced a setback with a double-bogey on the 17th hole, leading to a playoff between the two golfers.
The playoff saw both contenders par the first extra hole, setting the stage for Gumberg's triumph with a birdie on the second playoff hole. Ranked 669th in the world, this victory marks Gumberg's first on the DP World Tour, securing exemptions for the current season and the next.
Expressing his gratitude, Gumberg, overcome with emotion, stated, "It means everything, I never got this far in my dreams, so I am lost for words. It was what we practice for, all the long hours, it makes it worthwhile."
Despite leading overnight, Daniel Brown from England and Scotsman Connor Syme faltered in their final round, carding disappointing 75s. This performance relegated them to a group of six players tied for fourth place, ultimately missing out on the championship title.
