Jonathan Milan Sprints to Giro d'Italia Stage Four Victory, Pogacar Maintains Overall Lead

Posted : 08 May 2024

Italy's Jonathan Milan surged across the finish line to claim victory on stage four of the Giro d'Italia, showcasing his speed as he narrowly bested Kaden Groves from Australia and Phil Bauhaus from Germany in a thrilling bunch sprint. The triumph came hot on the heels of Milan's close defeat to Belgium's Tim Merlier in the previous day's stage three.

Meanwhile, Tadej Pogacar, the two-time Tour de France champion, maintained his grip on the overall lead, staying 46 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas in the standings. The peloton, including race favorites like Pogacar and Thomas, reeled in a small breakaway group in the final five kilometers, setting the stage for the anticipated sprint finale.

Amidst the excitement of Milan's victory, Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay's absence loomed large, as he was forced to abandon the race following two consecutive crashes on slippery roads. As the cyclists prepare for stage five, an undulating 178-kilometer route from Genova to Lucca awaits them, promising another day of intense competition and unpredictable twists in the Giro d'Italia.
