Jonathan Milan Clinches Third Stage Victory at Giro d'Italia

Posted : 18 May 2024

Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek continued his impressive run at the Giro d'Italia by securing his third stage victory in stage 13 on Friday. His team's flawless coordination played a crucial role, positioning him perfectly as they entered the final kilometer.

Despite Fernando Gaviria's initial lead as they rounded the last bend, Milan's exceptional form and strategic prowess as the points classification leader allowed him to clinch the win. Poland's Stanislaw Aniolkowski of Cofidis finished in a strong second place, followed by Phil Bauhaus from Bahrain-Victorious in third.

Reflecting on the race, Milan expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance. "I was delivered in perfect position before the sprint. Simone Consonni started his lead out from 400 metres to go," he said. Milan praised his teammates' commitment to the sprint finish, which played a vital role in his victory. "It's impressive how everyone on the team was committed to the sprint finish. I'm super happy and proud of my team," he added.

The 179-kilometer journey from Riccione to Cento was the flattest stage of the Giro, ideal for sprinters before Saturday's individual time trial and the subsequent mountain stages. Early in the race, three Italian riders—Andrea Pietrobon, Manuele Tarozzi, and Alessandro Tonelli—formed a breakaway, gaining a three-minute lead. However, the peloton increased their pace and reeled them in with over 50 kilometers left, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Despite being temporarily dropped by the peloton and expending significant energy to catch up, Milan showcased his resilience by securing another stage victory, adding to his earlier wins in stages four and eleven. "It feels great to win a third stage, but there was a moment when I was at the back of the peloton and echelons were formed. Our guys did an amazing job to bring us back together," Milan recounted.

Meanwhile, Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates maintained his lead in the overall standings, holding the maglia rosa with a two-minute and 40-second advantage over Daniel Felipe Martinez and Geraint Thomas trailing further behind in third. Pogacar remarked on the unpredictable nature of the Giro, expressing hope for a strong performance in the upcoming time trial.
