Jon Rahm Secures First LIV Golf Title After Dramatic Finish

Posted : 29 July 2024

Jon Rahm clinched his first LIV Golf title on Sunday after Tyrrell Hatton missed a crucial 6-foot par putt on the 18th hole that would have forced a playoff at LIV United Kingdom in Rocester, England. Rahm finished with a 4-under-par 67, totaling 13-under 271 at JCB Golf and Country Club, securing a one-stroke victory. The Spaniard's round included five birdies and a single bogey on the par-3 17th hole, followed by a closing par.

Hatton, who needed the par putt to tie Rahm, ended with a bogey and a round of 69, placing him in a three-way tie for second at 12 under with Chile's Joaquin Niemann and Australia's Cameron Smith. Hatton's performance was highlighted by a double bogey at the par-4 6th hole, sandwiched between two birdies, and additional birdies at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 12th, and 13th holes. Niemann scored seven birdies against one bogey, while Smith managed five birdies and three bogeys.

Reflecting on his win, Rahm expressed empathy for Hatton, stating, "You never want to see it end like that. I almost wish we would have got it done in the playoff." This victory marks Rahm's first since the 2023 Masters and comes after his departure from the PGA Tour in December when he was the world's third-ranked golfer. He started the final day in fourth place but climbed to the top after a stellar 8-under 63 in the first round on Friday.

Legion XIII, captained by Rahm, secured its fourth team title of the season with a collective 26-under score, aided by performances from Hatton, American Caleb Surratt, and Zimbabwe's Kieran Vincent. Ripper GC, led by Smith, finished second at 23 under, while Crushers GC and Smash GC tied for third at 20 under. Rahm, eyeing participation in the Paris Olympics for Spain, emphasized his team's goal of winning, stating, "I tried to set the tone to the team and just make it clear that the goal is to win, and I'm just glad that we're getting it done."
