Joel Dahmen announced his withdrawal from the Shriners Children's Open before the second round commenced on Friday, following a four-stroke penalty incurred for carrying an extra club during his first round. The 36-year-old golfer found himself in 131st place out of 132 competitors, sitting at 5-over-par as he faced the wind-delayed second round at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
This situation could have significant implications for Dahmen's playing status in the upcoming year. He currently ranks 124th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, and only the top 125 players at the end of the fall circuit will maintain full tour status for 2025. The pressure is on for Dahmen as he navigates the consequences of his misstep.
Dahmen admitted to self-reporting that he had 15 clubs in his bag, exceeding the allowed limit of 14. He explained that while many professionals carry 15 or even 16 clubs, he simply forgot to remove the extra one before play began. "I'd like to blame (caddie) Geno (Bonnalie). That would be the easy thing to do. It's not his fault either," Dahmen remarked, acknowledging the mix-up.
The extra club, which turned out to be a second 4-iron, created an unnecessary complication during his round. Dahmen expressed frustration over the situation, explaining that he usually keeps his equipment organized. "It wasn't in the right spot," he lamented. Despite this setback, Dahmen has a career PGA Tour win at the 2021 Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship and has gained exposure through the Netflix documentary series "Full Swing." He currently holds the 229th position in the Official World Golf Ranking.
