On Sunday in Tucson, Arizona, 59-year-old Joe Durant clinched the Cologuard Classic title by two strokes, shooting a final-round 4-under 67 to finish at 13-under 200 for the three-day event. This marked Durant's fifth victory on the PGA Tour Champions and his first since August 2021.
The win held special significance for Durant as the title sponsor of the tournament is a screening test for various forms of cancer. Durant, emotionally reflecting on the victory, dedicated it to his late nephew, Lee Stewart, who succumbed to cancer in August 2021, stating, "I was thinking about him all day today, and I just want to make him proud."
Durant's remarkable performance included birdies on three front-nine holes, and despite a lone bogey on No. 10, he seized a pivotal moment on the par-5 11th. Facing an awkward slope before the hole, Durant chose an unconventional approach, opting for a long putt that culminated in a sensational eagle.
The eagle propelled him to 13 under, and Durant maintained his composure, making pars for the remainder of the round. Despite competitors like Steven Alker, Jerry Kelly, and Kevin Sutherland making strong pushes, none could close the gap to less than 12 under. Sutherland's bid for a playoff fell short as he bogeyed the 18th.
For Durant, the victory was not only a professional triumph but also a personal and emotional journey. Expressing his awareness of the leaderboard and the need to finish strong, Durant acknowledged the mental fortitude required in the final stretch.
New Zealander Steven Alker, the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup winner, mounted a late charge with an eagle on No. 11 and birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, ultimately finishing tied for second at 11 under with Jerry Kelly and Kevin Sutherland. The day's low round of 65 belonged to Alker, showcasing his resilience on the course.
