Abdulmumin Jimoh has won the NSF President's Special Scrabble Retreat, tagged ‘the Celebration of a Consummate Administrator,’ which took place in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, over the weekend.
Jimoh, a member of ‘Team Nigeria’ at the 13th African Games and the West African Scrabble Championship (WASC), lost only 2 games out of 10 rounds in the one-day competition to claim the top prize with a healthy cumulative score of +1297 from 8 wins.
Abdulmumin Jimoh, a gold medalist at the 21st National Sports Festival, took an early lead after round one with a cumulative score of +327. David Yuwa and Simeon Oyediran followed as second and third respectively after the first round at the event held at Zalika Gardens.
Onyeka Ibe took the lead in round 2, with Eugene Okim and Negro Igbinadolor close behind.
Onyeka Ibe was overtaken in round 3 by Negro Igbinadolor, a member of ‘Team Nigeria’ at the second edition of the West African Scrabble Championship in Lagos, and remained the leader until Jimoh dethroned him in the crucial round 10.
Jimoh defeated Igbinadolor, a key member of the Rock Solid Jammers of Jos, by a margin of 56 points to win the well-attended Special Scrabble Retreat in honor of the President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka.
Onyeka Ibe, who led after the conclusion of round 2, eventually finished in 35th place with 2 additional wins and a cumulative score of -324.
David Yuwa secured third place, thanks to his victory in the tenth round over Toke Aka, the celebrant. Yuwa achieved a cumulative score of +642 with the same number of wins as Jimoh and Igbinadolor, who both had 8 wins.
From the 4th position held by Friday Ogbonyomi to the 8th spot, there were 7 wins each, while 10 players recorded 6 wins each. However, 3 players missed out on the prize money due to lower cumulative scores: Prince Majemite, Olu Chinedu, and Austin Isiekwe.
Olatunde Oduwole, one of the many friends and associates of Engineer Toke Aka who supported the Retreat, had kind words for all the players, competition officials, and supporters of the Special Scrabble Retreat.
"Your presence and support for a beacon in the sporting world, NSF President Toke Aka, is a clear indication and testimony of your appreciation and respect for him, both on and off the Scrabble board."
Oduwole, the initiator of the Ultimate Scrabble Showdown and a multiple national champion, further stated that Aka's sporting legacy will never be forgotten and will inspire many to give their best in Scrabble and sports in general.
"Aka is not just a lover of Scrabble and sports; his kindness and generosity are boundless. We all aspire to emulate and learn from his good deeds," Oduwole added.
"Congratulations to all the winners and participants who did not make it to the podium. We are all winners as long as we honor and celebrate a consummate administrator like Engineer Toke Aka," concluded Oduwole, the author of the Scrabble Evolution textbook.
Forty-five players competed for honors at the Retreat, which offered over half a million naira in prize money and gifts.
