Jhonattan Vegas Eyes Top 50 After Breaking Seven-Year Winless Streak

Posted : 07 August 2024

The PGA Tour veteran from Venezuela surged into the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings by securing his first win in seven years. However, he remains on edge as he enters the regular-season finale, the Wyndham Championship, ranked 67th in the official standings. The top 70 players after the Wyndham Championship qualify for the first leg of the playoffs.

As Jhonattan Vegas prepares for this week's tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina, he aims to climb higher, targeting the top 50. "The win changed my entire focus," Vegas said on Tuesday. "I was on a major medical extension and just trying to improve each week. Getting into the top 50 is crucial now, as it would simplify the following year significantly." Finishing the season inside the top 50 would grant Vegas entry into all of the PGA Tour's high-stakes signature events in 2025.

Vegas clinched his victory at the 3M Open with a strong performance, following up a third-round 63 with a final-round 70, securing his win just before the PGA Tour's brief Olympic break. This marked his first win since missing nearly the entire 2022-23 season due to elbow and shoulder injuries, which required surgeries. When asked about his celebration in Minnesota, Vegas highlighted the importance of his family. "It was more of a family celebration," he said. "It wasn't about me, but about the family coming together after everything we've been through."

At nearly 40 years old, Vegas appears to be turning a corner, having achieved three consecutive top-30 finishes before his 3M Open victory, and scoring a 64 at the John Deere Classic. Reflecting on last year's Wyndham Championship winner, Lucas Glover, who won at 43 and subsequently triumphed at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Vegas acknowledged the bigger picture. "You think about it all, but you have to take it one week at a time," he said. "Luckily, the pain is gone, and we can focus on this week and hopefully have a good run through the playoffs."
