Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas secured his first PGA Tour victory in seven years by birdieing the final hole to narrowly defeat US rookie Max Greyserman at the 3M Open on Sunday. The 39-year-old shot a one-under par 70 to finish with a total score of 17-under 267 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, clinching his fourth career PGA title.
Vegas, who had not won on the PGA Tour since his back-to-back Canadian Open victories in 2016 and 2017, had been dealing with the aftermath of right shoulder surgeries that kept him out of the 2023 season. Despite these challenges, he managed to overcome them and deliver a performance that he described as both physically and mentally demanding. “Winning out here is always special,” said Vegas, reflecting on his comeback.
Greyserman, who finished second with a total score of 16-under 268, made a strong push with a season-low 63 in the final round. Despite his impressive play, including a birdie on the 18th hole to momentarily take the lead, he fell short. Matt Kuchar and Maverick McNealy shared third place at 269, while Canada’s Taylor Pendrith took fifth at 270.
On the final hole, Vegas responded to Greyserman’s birdie with a crucial birdie of his own, sinking a short putt to secure the win. Despite an early bogey and several setbacks during the round, including a bogey at the ninth and a bunker shot at the 13th, Vegas’s resilience and skill were evident as he managed to regain his lead and ultimately triumph.
