Jay Don Blake to Celebrate 500th PGA Tour Start at Black Desert Championship

Posted : 10 October 2024

Jay Don Blake is set to achieve a significant milestone in his career as he prepares for his 500th start on the PGA Tour at the inaugural Black Desert Championship in Ivins, Utah. At 65 years old, Blake received a sponsor's exemption in May for this tournament, marking the first tour event in his home state since 1963. He expressed his excitement about the occasion, stating, "It's going to definitely be very exciting," during a press conference at the Black Desert Resort.

Blake's journey in golf began in St. George, Utah, where he grew up and excelled at Utah State University before turning professional in 1981. He joined the PGA Tour in 1987 and has fond memories of the area, recalling childhood moments spent in the valley where the tournament is now held. “I possibly probably stood on this same peninsula when I was a little kid,” he reminisced, highlighting the transformation of the landscape from its barren beginnings to the golf course that now exists.

The championship course, a par-71 layout stretching 7,371 yards, is notably the last design by the late Tom Weiskopf, completed in December 2022. Blake aims to leverage his extensive experience to compete against the younger players in the field, whom he referred to as the "big bombers." He believes that his knowledge of the game can give him an edge, stating, "I feel like maybe my knowledge can outsmart them and out-whoop those young kids."

Throughout his career, Blake has achieved notable success, including a victory at Torrey Pines in 1991 and three wins on the Champions Tour, with his last triumph being the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2011. He reached a career-high world ranking of No. 63 in June 1992 and recorded his best major performance with a tie for sixth at the 1992 U.S. Open.

With more than $10 million in career earnings and an estimated 230 additional starts on the Champions Tour, Blake reflects on his long-standing passion for golf, stating, "Golf has been my life. It's a great game... the great part about golf is you can play it at any age and love it."
