Jason Roy declines England selection; Kohler-Cadmore joins squad
Posted : 21 September 2023
Jason Roy declined the opportunity to participate in the rest of England's ODI series against Ireland, resulting in Tom Kohler-Cadmore's inclusion.
Kohler-Cadmore, a 29-year-old batter from Somerset, steps in for Joe Root, who will take a break in the lead-up to the World Cup after the Ireland series. Initially, Roy had been chosen for the World Cup squad but was replaced by Harry Brook due to fitness issues.
Roy, part of England's 2019 World Cup-winning team, was absent from the New Zealand series due to back issues. Luke Wright, the England selector, highlighted Brook's flexibility in the lineup as another reason for the change.
Joe Root, who struggled in the New Zealand series, was set to play against Ireland to regain form. However, he won't feature in the upcoming matches, allowing the team to focus on the World Cup.
Kohler-Cadmore, recognized for his aggressive batting and wicket-keeping skills, will join the England side post Somerset's game against Kent. Previously, he faced disciplinary action in 2019 for his involvement in a controversial WhatsApp group linked to a case where ex-teammate Alex Hepburn was convicted.
The updated England ODI squad includes Zak Crawley (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett (vice-captain), Sam Hain, Tom Hartley, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith, and Luke Wood.
