Jason Day, a former world No. 1, revealed on Wednesday that his recent resurgence in form has reignited his passion to capture a second major in 2025, a decade after winning his first at the PGA Championship. The Australian, who had an impressive run in 2015 and 2016 with seven PGA Tour titles, was once hailed as a potential successor to Tiger Woods. However, his career was derailed by persistent back injuries, and despite his success in the early part of his career, he has not won another major since his breakthrough victory at Whistling Straits.
Day’s resurgence began in 2023, after making swing adjustments aimed at alleviating pressure on his lower back. The improvements were evident as he secured his 13th PGA Tour title and finished tied for second at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. He has continued to post strong performances in 2024, with four top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour, and he is optimistic about his prospects for the upcoming year. Speaking ahead of the Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane, Day expressed confidence in his game, aiming to win a major and an elevated PGA Tour event in 2025.
The 37-year-old emphasized that health remains the primary factor in achieving his goals, as well as ensuring his swing and technique are in top form. Day is confident in his putting and short game, considering himself one of the best putters in the world, and believes that if his ball striking matches the rest of his game, he will have a good shot at winning additional majors. His ambition extends beyond his first major, as he aims to add more titles to his career, reaffirming his belief in his ability to compete at the highest level.
This week, Day is competing in the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland, marking his first appearance in his home country since 2017. His limited participation in domestic events has drawn criticism over the years, but Day is eager to change that narrative, particularly in Brisbane, where he grew up playing. He acknowledged the success of other top golfers like Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, who have won prestigious Australian events, and expressed his desire to secure a victory on home soil.
