Jaco Ahlers Leads SunBet Challenge with Impressive 64

Posted : 25 July 2024

Jaco Ahlers took full advantage of a hot putter to claim the lead after the first round of the SunBet Challenge at Wild Coast Sun, shooting a six-under-par 64. Ahlers, who closed his round with an impressive 30 strokes on the back nine, made five birdies on the final stretch to set the pace. He holds a one-stroke lead over Trevor Mahoney, who finished with a 65 after a strong back nine of 31 shots. Keegan McLachlan is a further stroke behind, having carded a 66 that included an eagle on the short par-four second hole.

The 41-year-old Ahlers, who has shown consistent form recently but struggled with putting, finally found his rhythm on the greens. He noted that his performance was driven by a significant improvement in his putting game, with just 12 putts on the back nine compared to 16 on the front. Despite a recent cold streak with the putter, Ahlers was able to capitalize on his strong play and manage the challenging conditions at Wild Coast Sun, where he has previously enjoyed success.

Mahoney, a former South African amateur standout, started his round with a level-par front nine but surged with back-to-back birdies on the ninth and tenth holes. He continued to improve his score with additional birdies on the 15th, 16th, and 18th holes, ending the day just one stroke behind Ahlers.

McLachlan, representing Silver Lakes Country Club, began his round on the 10th hole and made a steady start with a level-par front nine. His performance on the back nine was highlighted by an eagle and two additional birdies. Jacques P de Villiers, Gerhard Pepler, Pieter Moolman, Jaco van Zyl, Matthew Spacey, and Leon Vorster are tied for fourth place after all shooting three-under-par 67s.
