Jack Lisowski defeated Ali Carter 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Victorian Plumbing UK Championship in York. The world number 21’s victory marks his fourth appearance in the tournament’s last eight, a stage he has reached multiple times in his career.
His most memorable UK Championship run occurred two years ago when he reached the semi-finals, narrowly losing to eventual champion Mark Allen after leading 5-3. Lisowski now has the chance to avenge that loss, as he will face Allen again in this year's quarter-finals.
At 33, Lisowski is still in search of his first ranking title, having finished as runner-up in six finals to date. Despite this, his aggressive, attacking style of play has impressed throughout the tournament, including his memorable 6-4 win over Mark Selby in the previous round. With three more wins required to claim the title, Lisowski remains one of the top contenders for the trophy in York.
Carter’s defeat ended his hopes of breaking into the top ten of the Johnstone's Paint World Rankings, which would have earned him a spot in the lucrative Riyadh Season Snooker Championship. The match was competitive, with Carter briefly fighting back after Lisowski took an early 1-0 lead.
Carter leveled the match at 1-1, but Lisowski responded strongly with breaks of 85, 63, and 106 to establish a commanding 4-1 lead. Carter managed to reduce the deficit to 5-4, but Lisowski sealed the victory with a composed 55 in the tenth frame.
Reflecting on his performance, Lisowski admitted that he didn’t play at his best, especially toward the end of the match. He acknowledged that his lapses in concentration could have allowed Carter to level at 5-5.
However, Lisowski was grateful for the overwhelming support from the York crowd, which he described as his favorite. Despite the pressure of playing in front of such passionate fans, he felt his concentration was improving, which played a significant role in his success.
Meanwhile, world number three Mark Allen secured his own quarter-final berth with a 6-4 win over China’s Wu Yize. Allen, the 2022 UK Championship winner, was pushed hard by the 22-year-old Wu, who had been in strong form earlier in the season.
Wu led 4-2 at one stage, but Allen produced breaks of 110, 73, 100, and 80 to win the next four frames and close out the match. Reflecting on his upcoming clash with Lisowski, Allen praised his opponent's playing style, noting that when Lisowski is on form, snooker is at its best. He is determined to stop Lisowski’s momentum and advance to the next round.
