J.T. Poston marked his return to victory at the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas on Sunday, showcasing an impressive performance on the back nine. With a final round score of 4-under-par 67, Poston finished the tournament at 22-under 262, securing a narrow one-shot win over his playing partner Doug Ghim, who shot a final-round 65. The tournament faced delays due to a significant wind interruption on Friday morning, causing the third round to extend into Sunday, where Poston took advantage of crucial birdies on Nos. 14, 15, and 18 to establish a three-shot lead.
The par-5 ninth hole proved pivotal, as Ghim capitalized with an 11-foot eagle putt while Poston settled for par, creating a two-shot swing in Ghim’s favor. However, Poston regained momentum with consecutive birdies on Nos. 12, 13, and 15, including a remarkable 21.5-foot putt, which provided him with enough of a buffer to withstand a lone bogey at No. 17. "Doug was obviously making some birdies, and he made a nice three there on 9 and was applying the pressure," Poston reflected. "I told myself I was playing good, putting good, just trying to stay in my own lane."
This victory marks Poston's third career win on the PGA Tour and his first since the 2022 John Deere Classic. Competing despite finishing in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings, Poston acknowledged the challenges of securing a win on tour, stating, "It's never easy winning out here on Tour. Today was no different." He focused on his strategy to take the lead during the completion of the third round, which set the stage for his eventual triumph.
Meanwhile, Doug Ghim made significant progress in the FedEx Cup Fall points standings, climbing from No. 93 to No. 70. If he maintains his performance and finishes the fall in the 51-60 range, he will qualify for the first two signature events in 2025. Reflecting on his experience in the final round, Ghim noted, "I did everything I could obviously. Haven't had the best history so far in final rounds and final groups, so it's definitely going to be a little badge on my chest." Matti Schmid and Rico Hoey both finished tied for third at 19-under with final rounds of 66, while Michael Kim’s impressive 62 brought him into a tie for fifth at 18-under alongside Davis Thompson and K.H. Lee, both of whom shot 66.
