The 2023 edition of the IWF World Junior Championships kicked off with a vibrant Opening Ceremony in Guadalajara, Mexico, setting the stage for the upcoming weightlifting competitions. Before the lifters took center stage, the 44 national delegations and 229 athletes present were treated to a spectacle that blended cultural Mexican elements with acrobatic performances, a parade of flags, and welcome speeches from event organizers.
The festivities commenced with an outdoor display of "lucha libre," Mexico's famed wrestling, featuring fighters adorned in masks and extravagant costumes. The enthusiastic support from the audience underscored the popularity of "lucha libre" in the country. In a special moment, the ceremony paid tribute to Pyrros Dimas, the three-time weightlifting Olympic champion and Vice-President of the IWF.
Guests then transitioned to the venue, where the ceremony continued with more formal proceedings. The parade of national flags, representing the participating delegations, stood out as one of the evening's highlights. Dignitaries took the podium to deliver speeches, with IWF President Mohammed Jalood expressing his joy at inaugurating the event in Guadalajara.
President Jalood celebrated the historical moment for the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) – the reinstatement of weightlifting in the Olympic program, following the recent IOC decision. He emphasized the unity and hard work of the weightlifting family in saving the sport. Recognizing his Iraqi roots, President Jalood drew a parallel between Babilon, his birthplace, and Mexico, applauding the country's rich history.
From the host nation, Ana Guevara, director of CONADE, extended her satisfaction with hosting the IWF family, anticipating a lasting legacy and substantial growth for weightlifting in Mexico. The opening ceremony concluded with captivating acrobatic performances, featuring musical and lighting effects, setting the tone for a nine-day competition.
This marks the second consecutive IWF World Championship in Mexico, following the 2022 IWF World Youth Championships held in Leon. On Day 0, President Jalood led the ITOs Technical Meeting, emphasizing the officials' crucial role in ensuring a fair and smooth competition, expressing gratitude for their commitment and professionalism.
