Italian Open: Adrian Meronk advances in the race to face the US after winning on the Ryder Cup course
Posted : 09 May 2023
With the recent resignations of LIV players Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Sergio Garcia from the DP World Tour, the Ryder Cup has been going through a trying time.
Even if it was improbable that any of that esteemed trio would have been selected for Luke Donald's squad for the match in Rome this September, it is unquestionably demoralising that such esteemed individuals cannot participate in future European initiatives.
Regardless of the merits or demerits of LIV's Saudi Arabia-funded entry into professional golf, the fact that it is having such an effect on the game's most popular match must be upsetting to many European golf fans.
And with further severe fines from the DP World Tour expected for players who disobeyed the prohibition of waivers for LIV tournaments, it's possible that additional prominent European names would leave the circuit where they first gained notoriety.
However, the appeal of the biannual match versus the United States persisted despite last week's turmoil overshadowing an Italian Open played on the same course that will host the Ryder Cup this year.
It's true that much of the field at Marco Simone was a tier below those vying for spots on Donald's squad this fall, with the focus of the golf season being on the US.
However, the eventual champion, Adrian Meronk of Poland, is one of those who has a right to worry if he will take part in Europe's bid to reclaim the trophy in September.
The 29-year-old won the Irish Open in a sprint before defeating Adam Scott by five strokes to win the Australian Open in December of last year. This was the 29-year-third old's national championship since July.
