Ireland Makes Key Changes for Second Test Against Springboks

Posted : 12 July 2024

Coach Andy Farrell has implemented several changes to the Ireland team ahead of their second test against the Springboks in Durban, notably replacing Peter O’Mahony as captain with Caelan Doris. O’Mahony, who had a subdued performance in their previous 27-20 loss at Loftus, will start from the bench, allowing Tadhg Beirne to move to blindside flank. James Ryan steps in for Beirne in the second row, strengthening the forward pack.

Injuries have necessitated further adjustments, with Dan Sheehan and Craig Casey replaced by Ronan O’Kelleher and Conor Murray respectively. Despite these changes, the team retains its competitive edge with experienced replacements. However, Bundee Aki's absence due to a shoulder injury leaves a significant gap in midfield, with Garry Ringrose stepping in alongside Robbie Henshaw.

Additional adjustments see Rob Herring, Stuart McCoskley, and Caolin Blade added to the reserves for the match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park. The Ireland lineup includes a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, reflecting Farrell's strategy to balance experience with fresh vigor in pursuit of a stronger performance against South Africa.
