Iowa Volleyball aims for middle dominance led by Delaney McSweeney

Posted : 26 September 2023
Iowa's women's volleyball team, which ranked 13th in the Big Ten conference last season, is striving for a better finish in 2023. Head coach Jim Barnes is focusing on strengthening the middle blocker position, with senior Delaney McSweeney at the forefront of this effort.

Coach Barnes aims to make Iowa dominant in the middle, both offensively and defensively. He believes that by excelling in this area, they can put opposing teams in uncomfortable positions and limit their offensive options if their own middle blockers struggle.

Part of this strategy involves encouraging setters to frequently utilize the middle blockers, even from farther distances from the net. Delaney McSweeney, who stands at 2 meters tall, has embraced this approach and has shown significant improvement.

In her first season with Iowa, McSweeney recorded 195 kills and 46 blocks. This season, she has already amassed 126 kills and 43 blocks in just two conference matches, with notable increases in her kills per set and blocks per set averages compared to the previous year.

McSweeney's focus for this season is to enhance her blocking skills, which she has been working on diligently. She also aims to continue building a strong connection with setter Bailey Ortega, who has been feeding her the ball consistently.

Despite McSweeney's impressive contributions, Iowa faced challenges in their first two conference matches against Minnesota and Ohio State. The team is gearing up for upcoming road games against Indiana and Illinois, with hopes of securing victories and climbing the conference standings. The second match will be streamed live for VBTV subscribers worldwide.
