India Triumphs Over China, Georgia in Chess Olympiad

Posted : 19 September 2024

The highly anticipated chess match between India and China took a dramatic turn when China chose to rest their top player, Ding Liren, despite his impending World Championship match against Gukesh D in November. This decision, notable for deviating from the norm of having the reigning World Champion play in crucial matches, drew criticism from commentator GM Peter Svidler. Svidler emphasized the significance of Ding Liren's absence, suggesting that China's chances to win the Olympiad were compromised by not fielding their strongest player.

In the early exchanges, the game between Praggnanandhaa R and Yu Yangyi ended in a draw on board two. Arjun Erigaisi, who had previously won all his matches, faced a challenging middlegame but ended his streak with a draw against Bu Xiangzhi. Bu, after contemplating for a significant period, opted for a perpetual check, recognizing that Erigaisi's position was solid, and the outcome was impacted by the standings on the other boards.

As the match progressed, Pentala Harikrishna drew with Wang Yue, placing hopes on Gukesh D to secure a victory against Wei Yi. Despite a prolonged battle that seemed destined for a draw, Gukesh seized an opportunity on move 71 when Wei Yi made a critical error, leading to a narrow 2.5-1.5 win for India. Gukesh expressed his strategy of pressing on in the game, given the favorable circumstances on other boards.

In other results, Iran defeated Vietnam 2.5-1.5, with Pouya Idani's win proving decisive. Iran’s strong performance, led by Parham Maaghsoodloo and Amin Tabatabaei, secured them a clear second place and set up a future clash with India. Meanwhile, in the women’s section, India’s team, bolstered by victories from Vaishali R and Vantika Agrawal, overcame Georgia 3-1, maintaining their ideal tournament record. Poland and Ukraine’s match ended in a draw, with India gaining a two-point lead over their rivals. The Olympiad also saw a record number of participating teams, with 188 in the open section and 169 in the women’s tournament.
