India is performing exceptionally well in both the open and women’s sections at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. In the open section, the Indian team secured a dominant 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan, with Gukesh D and Arjun Erigaisi winning their matches, while Vidit Gujrathi narrowly missed defeating Mamedyarov. In the women’s section, India also triumphed, defeating Kazakhstan 2.5-1.5. Both teams have been consistent and have avoided any close calls, distinguishing themselves from other top contenders in the tournament.
In the next round, Gukesh and the Indian team will face the host nation, Hungary. Hungary recently defeated Ukraine in round 5, with Richard Rapport outperforming Vasyl Ivanchuk, while the remaining games ended in draws. Hungary has a storied history of Olympiad success, having won 12 medals, though their last gold was in 1978. Richard Rapport, now leading the Hungarian team, is determined to build on this legacy as they aim to improve on their previous performances on home ground.
China is also progressing steadily in the open section, although their victories have been by narrower margins. In round 5, they defeated Spain with a 3-1 score, thanks to a win by Wei Yi. Next, China will face the rising team of Vietnam, who are on an impressive streak. Vietnam upset Poland in round 5, with Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh winning their games. Le Tuan Minh, a grandmaster since 2022, has been a standout player, and his current performance rating of 2810 marks him as a player to watch.
In the women’s section, Armenia and Mongolia are keeping pace with India at the top. Armenia pulled off a major upset by defeating China in round 5, with key contributions from Anna Sargsyan and Lilit Mktchian. Mongolia also earned a significant victory, defeating the USA 2.5-1.5, with Munkhzul Turmunkh securing the decisive win. As the tournament progresses, India will face Armenia, while Mongolia will take on the strong Georgian team, which is just one point behind the leaders.
