Ilorin to host 3-day national junior squash tournament

Posted : 27 July 2024

A three-day national junior squash tournament will be held in Ilorin from August 15 to August 17, as confirmed by the organisers. This event marks an important milestone in the promotion of squash among young athletes in Nigeria, offering them a platform to showcase their talents and gain competitive experience.

The Executive Chairman of the Kwara Sports Commission, Malam Bola Mogaji, confirmed the details of the tournament in a press release in Ilorin. He emphasized the significance of such events in nurturing young talents and promoting sports development at the grassroots level. Mogaji expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming tournament, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have gone into its organization.

According to Mogaji, the tournament will feature players in the Under-11, Under-13, and Under-15 categories from various parts of the country. This age-specific categorization aims to provide a level playing field for the participants, ensuring that they compete with peers of similar age and skill levels. The tournament is expected to draw a significant number of young squash enthusiasts, eager to demonstrate their skills and gain valuable experience.

The Ex Squash Players Association of Nigeria (EX PRO), in collaboration with the Kwara State Sports Commission, is responsible for organizing the event. This partnership underscores the commitment of former professional squash players to give back to the sport and support the development of future generations. The involvement of EX PRO brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the organization of the tournament, ensuring a high standard of competition and event management.

Mogaji also mentioned that no fewer than 200 players are expected to participate in the event, which has been tagged the '5th Ex Pro Tournament.' These young athletes, along with their coaches and families, will begin arriving in Ilorin on August 15, marking the start of an exciting three-day competition. The large number of participants reflects the growing interest in squash among Nigerian youth and the success of previous editions of the tournament.

To ensure a smooth and successful event, comprehensive arrangements have been made. Mogaji assured that all necessary measures have been taken to guarantee a hitch-free tournament. This includes logistics, accommodation, and security arrangements, all aimed at providing a conducive environment for the players and their supporters. The organizers are committed to delivering a well-coordinated and memorable event.

One of the highlights of the tournament will be the unveiling of the newly built eight squash courts at the state’s Stadium Complex in Ilorin. This facility is expected to enhance the experience of the players and spectators, providing a modern and well-equipped venue for the competition. The unveiling of these courts during the tournament underscores the state’s dedication to improving sports infrastructure and supporting the development of squash in Nigeria.
