The 9th Western Zonal edition of the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) Ladies Golf Championship, themed 'Queen of the Greens,' is scheduled to tee off on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the Ilorin Golf Club.
The three-day event will feature over 70 ladies from golf clubs across Nigeria, with numerous side attractions including the promotion of cultural heritage, a visit to the Children Reception Centre, and a special guest appearance by men on Saturday.
The 54-hole game has been sanctioned by the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
At a press briefing on Monday, August 12, 2024, Evelyn Balogun, the Zonal Vice President of LGAN and anchor of the Western Zone, revealed that over 50 caddies participated in a tournament as part of the event’s build-up.
Balogun confirmed that the Championship is fully sponsored by the Kwara State Government.
Discussing the event schedule, Balogun outlined that on Tuesday, Super Veterans (men over 75 years of age) will take to the course. On Wednesday, there will be a ceremonial tee-off, flag hoisting, and a cocktail in the evening before the main competition begins.
Wednesday’s activities will also include a visit to the Children Reception Centre (Motherless Babies Home). The day’s events will be chaired by the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bolakale Adisa Magaji, who will be the Special Guest.
Expected at the ceremonial tee-off and flag hosting are the First Lady of the State, Olufolake AbdulRazaq, the Grand Patron, General Alabi Isama, and the First Lady Captain of Ilorin Golf Club, Sikirat Anako.
The Championship will commence on Thursday, August 15, 2024, with ladies with handicaps of 29 to 36 playing on the course. Players with handicaps of 0 to 28 will compete on Thursday and Friday, with the top 45 players advancing to the final day on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
Balogun assured that the event’s outlines will be strictly followed, with winners receiving trophies at the end of the Championship.
In his opening address, the Captain of the Club, Jide Allen, praised the organizers of the event and expressed gratitude to the State Government, First Lady Olufolake AbdulRazaq, and others for their support of the Championship.
