A man-of-the-match performance by Faruk Yusuf provided the motivation needed as Nigeria's U-23 national handball team defeated Moldova 25-22 on Thursday, securing a semi-final place at the 5th IHF Emerging Nations Championship in Varna, Bulgaria.
The team, led by Coach Solomon Yola, knew they had to win, as Azerbaijan was already out of contention. Moldova was equally eager to claim victory.
The European team had the upper hand in the early part of the first half, with Ion Saharnean delivering a strong performance between the posts. However, Faruk Yusuf swiftly stepped up, producing a fantastic display by scoring six goals and providing four assists in the first half. He directly contributed to 10 of Nigeria’s 14 goals, compared to Moldova's 12, despite a 48% shooting efficiency. Vladislav Caraman and Roman Zacaciurin, Moldova’s two most prolific backs in the competition, also put in solid performances.
As seen in previous matches, Nigeria had a strong second half. However, for the first part of the period, Moldova remained close, with the gap never exceeding three goals. The score stood at 19-17 with 17 minutes left to play, while Yusuf was given a brief rest in attack during the early minutes of the second half.
The decisive moment came when Faruk Yusuf, Nigeria’s top scorer in the competition with 19 goals—eight of which came in this match—returned to the court. Nigeria went on a strong run, with goalkeeper Obinna Okwor making three consecutive saves.
While Moldova managed to stay competitive, they lacked the firepower to mount a comeback. Nigeria ultimately secured a 25-22 victory, becoming the first African side to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
The Republic of Moldova, having lost two of their three group-stage matches, will now compete in the Placement Matches.
