Hugo, Korb Triumph in Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Championship

Jean Hugo and Ruan Korb experienced immense satisfaction as they secured a decisive victory in the Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Championship held at the Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate on Sunday. The duo, supported by family and friends, completed a remarkable final-round performance, finishing 20 under par with a closing score of 63. This win marked Hugo’s second triumph of the season, following his success in the Vodacom Origins of Golf last month, while Korb celebrated his return to the winner’s circle after his last victory in 2022.

 

Korb expressed his delight at returning to form, acknowledging Hugo's crucial role in their win. “I’m very happy to be back in the winner’s circle. I thanked Jean on 18 for making that possible for me,” Korb said. Hugo shared his appreciation for the balance in his life, attributing their success to a combination of personal contentment and hard work. He emphasized that the victory demonstrates the enduring appeal of golf across all ages, expressing gratitude and feeling blessed.

 

The teams of Trevor Fisher Jnr and Stefan Wears-Taylor and Jaco Ahlers and Michael Hollick finished tied for second place with a score of 16 under par. Hugo and Korb started strongly, turning five under par and distancing themselves from the competition on a challenging, windy day. Their performance included three consecutive birdies from the 13th hole, providing them with a comfortable four-stroke lead as they approached the 18th hole.

 

Reflecting on their victory, Hugo enjoyed the opportunity to savor the win fully. “It was awesome today,” he said, noting a solid start with a birdie on the first hole and Korb's impressive eagle on the second. Hugo appreciated the calm and focus that allowed them to enjoy their final holes, remarking on the pleasure of securing their win and celebrating their achievement.
