HS Prannoy Battles Through Health Setbacks

Posted : 16 January 2025

HS Prannoy, after his first-round loss, briefly seemed to wrestle with the question of how he has maintained motivation despite ongoing health challenges. A brief moment of reflection showed that emotion nearly overcame his usual calm demeanor, but he quickly regained control, returning to his steady tone.

He acknowledged the difficulties he’s faced but emphasized his focus on improving rather than dwelling on past setbacks. "I’m ready to work hard regardless of the results," he said, expressing hope that his hard work would eventually pay off in future tournaments.

Prannoy, who had an impressive 2023 and was eyeing a strong performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, encountered a major setback with a recurrence of an acid reflux condition followed by a bout of chikungunya.

These health issues severely impacted his ambitions for Paris, forcing him to spend much of the remainder of the year recovering. The PETRONAS Malaysia Open, his first tournament since Paris, saw him secure a win over Brian Yang but ultimately suffer a loss to Li Shi Feng. Despite these efforts, Prannoy assessed his condition as only 60 percent.

In his home tournament, the YONEX-SUNRISE India Open, Prannoy faced Su Li Yang in the first round. Unfortunately, his recovery was still ongoing, and he struggled to compete at full capacity, resulting in a 73-minute loss.

Prannoy reflected on the long road to recovery, explaining that the aftereffects of chikungunya had left him unable to return to his normal physical state for months. "It’s a tough spot to be in as an athlete with many uncertainties regarding physical health," he admitted.

Despite these challenges, Prannoy remains optimistic. He stated that he has addressed many of his health concerns and is now around 60 to 70 percent fit. He acknowledged the physical difficulties he faced in the India Open, citing ankle issues and sluggish movement as key factors affecting his performance. Still, Prannoy remains focused on staying in the competitive circuit, expressing satisfaction with his progress and determination to continue improving.
