Hovland wins BMW Championship

Posted : 21 August 2023
Viktor Hovland and his caddie, Shay Knight, engaged in a difficult conversation following Hovland's T13 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Hovland, ranking 133rd in Final Round Scoring Average on the PGA TOUR, was unsatisfied with his Sunday performance. However, Hovland turned things around at the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields.

In a remarkable comeback, Hovland shot a course-record 61, including a stunning 7-under-par 28 on the back nine. He made 10 birdies and only one bogey, securing a two-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick. This win marked Hovland's fifth PGA TOUR victory and propelled him from 7th to 2nd in the FedExCup standings.

Hovland's round was nearly flawless, hitting 12/14 fairways, 16/18 greens, and excelling in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Strokes Gained: Putting. His aggressive and fearless style of play shone through, making him a dominant force on the course.

Scheffler, initially tied for the lead with Fitzpatrick, had a strong start with birdies on the first three holes and maintained a lead for most of the day. However, the last five holes saw a significant shift. Scheffler played them in 1 over par, while Hovland surged with 4 under par.

Hovland's caddie, Knight, noted his automatic and aggressive playstyle. Despite his concerns about Sunday performances, Hovland's approach paid off brilliantly, impressing both his caddie and fellow players.

Rory McIlroy, who played alongside Hovland, sensed something remarkable happening around the 14th hole. McIlroy shot a 66 but felt that Hovland's performance overshadowed his own.

Reflecting on the competition, Fitzpatrick commended Hovland's exceptional round and humorously shared that he playfully called Hovland a "little s---." Fitzpatrick expressed satisfaction in his own performance and being in contention with the World No. 1 player, ultimately acknowledging Hovland's impressive come-from-behind victory.
