Charley Hoffman, aiming for his fifth US PGA Tour title at age 48, delivered a stunning 10-birdie round of nine-under-par 63 on Friday to share the halfway lead at the American Express tournament with the Philippines' Rico Hoey.
Hoffman, whose last victory came in 2016, is chasing another title at the event where he secured his first win in 2007. Despite changes to the courses in La Quinta, California, the seasoned pro thrives in the pro-am format and the favorable weather, which he said suits his game perfectly.
Hoffman’s round included an impressive four consecutive birdies from the fifth to the eighth on the Nicklaus Tournament course, capping off his day with a six-under back nine to reach 16-under-par.
Meanwhile, Hoey matched Hoffman’s total with a flawless display of 10 birdies, including six in a seven-hole stretch. The Filipino golfer, still adjusting to life on the PGA Tour, admitted to being "starstruck" playing alongside seasoned stars like Hoffman and Rickie Fowler but remained focused on staying competitive.
Trailing by one stroke at 15-under were Americans Justin Lower and Mark Hubbard, along with Austria’s Sepp Straka. Lower posted a six-under 66 on the Nicklaus course, while Hubbard and Straka recorded bogey-free rounds of eight-under 64s on the more challenging Stadium Course.
Australian Jason Day and J.J. Spaun sit two strokes off the lead, with a group of big names, including Justin Thomas and Fowler, in close pursuit at 131. Notably, 17-year-old Blades Brown made an impressive professional debut, shooting an eight-under 64 with 10 birdies, giving himself a chance to make the cut after the third round.
