Hideki Matsuyama staged a remarkable comeback in the final round of the Genesis Invitational, carding a nine-under 62 at Riviera Country Club to secure his ninth PGA Tour title. Starting the day six shots behind leader Patrick Cantlay, Matsuyama's exceptional performance left him 17 under par, one shot short of the course record.
The 2021 Masters champion showcased his skill with three birdies at the start and six more on the back nine, leaving American trio Will Zalatoris, Luke List, and Cantlay stunned. Matsuyama emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum as he looks ahead to Augusta.
Despite a strong challenge from Matsuyama, Will Zalatoris and Luke List managed to finish at -14, while Patrick Cantlay settled for fourth place at -13, along with Xander Schauffele and Adam Hadwin. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood secured a five-way tie for 10th after concluding with a 67.
World number two Rory McIlroy finished in joint 24th, expressing his belief that he is close to where he wants to be but acknowledging the precision required at Riviera. The US PGA Tour proceeds with the Mexico Open scheduled for February 22.
