Hayden Springer delivered an electrifying performance at the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic in Illinois, shooting a stunning 12-under-par 59 to seize a commanding four-shot lead. His round marked only the 14th sub-60 score in PGA Tour history, showcasing a flawless display with eight birdies and two eagles at TPC Deere Run.
Springer, ranked 236th in the world, set the course ablaze particularly on the front nine, where he started with an eagle on the second hole and followed up with six birdies in seven holes to make the turn at an impressive eight under par. His momentum continued unabated as he began the back nine with five consecutive birdies, extending his score to nine under after a 19-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole.
The highlight of Springer's round came on the par-five 17th, where he chipped in from approximately 55 yards for an eagle, bringing him to 11 under. Needing a birdie on the 18th to break 60, Springer calmly sank a 13-foot putt to achieve his dream round of 59, a feat he described as surreal and unforgettable.
Reflecting on his extraordinary performance, Springer attributed his success to rediscovering his form with the help of a former coach after a challenging stretch of missed cuts. His recent adjustments paid off handsomely, culminating in a spectacular display of putting prowess and confidence throughout the round.
Springer's phenomenal opening round left him comfortably atop the leaderboard, four strokes ahead of England's Harry Hall, who carded an impressive eight-under-par 63. American golfers Kevin Chappell and Hayden Buckley followed closely tied for third with seven-under-par 64s, while eight players shared sixth place after shooting 65s, setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
