Harry Hall of England was denied his maiden PGA Tour triumph when Emiliano Grillo defeated Adam Schenk in a play-off to take home the Charles Schwab Challenge trophy.
Grillo of Argentina and Schenk of America each started the fourth round four strokes and one stroke behind Hall, respectively.
When Hall failed, the 30-year-old appeared to be on his way to victory but double-bogeyed 18 after driving into a stream, which caused his ball to go back in his direction.
Grillo, though, rallied and beat Schenk with a birdie on the second play-off hole.
Grillo recorded a final-round two-under-par 68 to claim his second PGA Tour victory, although it is his first since 2015.
Hall had a strong start to the day at the venerable Colonial with back-to-back birdies on the opening two holes, but four bogeys caused his advantage to disappear.
However, as he teed off on the last hole, the 25-year-old found himself in a three-way tie for first place with Grillo and Schenk.
He missed the play-off by one stroke, though, after hitting his tee shot into the water and making a closing bogey as he sought to win his first PGA Tour championship. He ended with a score of 73.
Hall and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who shot a three-under in Texas, tied for third place.
