Gukesh D. Takes Lead Over Ding Liren in Historic Chess Championship

Posted : 09 December 2024

In a thrilling game this afternoon in Singapore, 18-year-old chess prodigy Gukesh D made a significant move towards breaking records, defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in their eleventh match of the series.

With a 6-5 lead and only three games remaining, Gukesh’s victory brought him closer to becoming the youngest classical chess champion in history. The game was particularly intense, with both players spending nearly an hour on a single move, highlighting the high level of strategy and pressure at play.

The match saw a double ceremonial first move, with GM Hou Yifan, a four-time Women’s World Champion, making the opening move for Ding Liren, and GM Eugene Torre, a Filipino chess icon, doing the same for Gukesh.

Torre, a pioneer in Asian chess, was a significant figure in Gukesh's preparation, as Gukesh used a reversed Blumenfeld gambit for the first time in his career. The gambit, though not computer-approved, caught Ding off guard and set the stage for a challenging game. Ding spent nearly 40 minutes deciding his response, reflecting his uncertainty and the mental strain of the game.

Throughout the game, Gukesh and Ding navigated complex positions, with Gukesh facing some difficulties in the opening but regaining control in the middlegame. Ding, already under time pressure, struggled to keep up with Gukesh’s aggressive play.

The turning point came when Gukesh sacrificed a b-pawn and launched an attack on the queenside, forcing Ding into a precarious position. With his time dwindling, Ding blundered on move 28, leading to a piece loss and his eventual resignation. The game ended with a sense of inevitability, as Gukesh capitalized on his opponent’s mistakes.

With the series now at 6-5 in Gukesh’s favor, the chess world eagerly awaits the twelfth game, scheduled for Monday, December 9th. Ding, despite his defeat, remains hopeful for a comeback, recalling his previous recovery in the series. However, with Gukesh’s strong performance and momentum, the final stretch of games promises to be an exciting conclusion to this historic match.
