Nigerian expatriates around the world have rallied behind renowned chess master Tunde Onakoya as he embarks on a quest to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
Onakoya officially kicked off the marathon, announcing the start through his X account with the caption, "Game time." He excitedly shared, "We haven't even started yet and Nigerians are already trooping in to camp out with me."
Among the enthusiastic supporters cheering Onakoya on is Nigerian singer Adekunle Kosoko, better known as Adekunle Gold. The event is taking place at the iconic Times Square in New York City, commencing at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, and scheduled to conclude at 8 p.m. on April 19.
During this marathon, Onakoya aims to engage in an intense chess battle, striving to play continuously for 58 hours without suffering a single defeat. The current Guinness World Record, achieved by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018, stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds.
