In the opening round of the Altron Big Easy Tour event at Kyalami Country Club, Coert Groenewald, Ruan de Smidt, and Samuel Simpson emerged as leaders, each carding impressive rounds of six-under-par 66, sharing a two-shot lead after Monday's play. The tournament, the seventh of the season, saw the players navigate the challenging course, with Groenewald, in particular, showcasing resilience after a setback. Despite an unwelcome double-bogey on the 16th hole, Groenewald rebounded with a string of birdies, finishing strong to secure a place among the top three leaders.
For Groenewald, the journey unfolded with early birdies on the 10th, 13th, and 15th holes, but a stumbling block on the 16th threatened his momentum. Undeterred, he steadied himself, notching a birdie to complete the front nine with a score of 32.
The back nine proved steady for Groenewald, who managed to avoid dropping shots while capitalizing on a crucial trio of birdies from holes four through six. Despite the course's challenges, including tight fairways, Groenewald expressed satisfaction with his game, citing trust in his abilities to secure a commendable score.
Ruan de Smidt also delivered a notable performance, featuring an eagle on the fourth hole, complemented by five birdies and a solitary drop. De Smidt's adept use of the putter, especially on the front nine, played a pivotal role in his strong round.
Reflecting on his performance, he acknowledged the significance of the eagle in turning the tide, allowing him to play his game effectively. The leaderboard saw Ryan Tipping secure a solo third position at five-under, while Franklin Manchest, Makhetha Mazibuko, Matthew Rushton, DK Kim, and Ricky Hendler shared the fifth spot, each carding a four-under-par round.
