Suzuki Griquas pulled off a stunning upset against the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV in Kimberley on Friday, overcoming a 17-point halftime deficit to clinch their maiden Carling Currie Cup victory. The first half saw the Sharks excel in attack, securing a bonus point with four tries, setting a confident tone that seemed insurmountable at the break.
However, Griquas emerged revitalized after halftime, displaying remarkable vigor and determination. They dominated proceedings in the second half, mounting a spirited comeback with four tries of their own to complement their solitary first-half effort by Hanru Sirgel.
In a late-game surge, the Sharks managed to level the score at 31-all with just minutes remaining, thanks to Eduan Keyter’s sprint down the left wing and Lionel Cronje’s accurate conversion. Yet, it was Griquas who had the last word when a penalty near the halfway line provided Lubabalo Dobela the opportunity to secure victory with a successful kick, his team's only penalty attempt of the match.
Despite a shaky start characterized by defensive lapses that allowed the Sharks to capitalize on limited possession and territory, Griquas ultimately deserved their triumph. Their clinical execution in attack, particularly evident through tries by Cameron Hufke, Cobo Dlamini, Sango Xamlashe, and Gustav du Rand, showcased their resilience and ability to capitalize on momentum shifts throughout the game.
