Graham van der Merwe may not have secured his first professional victory, but he declared his come-from-behind triumph at the fifth event of the Betway Big Easy Tour in Krugersdorp as the most significant win of his career. Starting the final round three shots behind local competitors Simon Du Plooy and Matthew Rushton, who had both delivered impressive performances in the initial rounds of the 54-hole tournament, Van der Merwe was determined to turn the tide.
In an outstanding final round, Van der Merwe shot a seven-under-par 65, bringing his tournament total to 16-under. He then waited in the clubhouse as the overnight leaders, Rushton and Du Plooy, battled it out for the title.
Among the competitors, Englishman Joe Knox emerged as a surprise contender, recording the lowest round of the day with a stunning 63, finishing at 14-under and tying for second place with Du Plooy. Rushton’s even-par 72 saw him complete the tournament in fourth place with a total score of 12-under-par 204.
After his title-winning round, an elated Van der Merwe reflected on the day’s events, saying, “It was an awesome day. I’ve been playing nicely for a long time, but today and yesterday, it all came together.” He acknowledged the importance of having his long game, putting, and chipping all functioning well to secure the victory. The win was particularly meaningful to him, as he had contemplated stepping away from golf just a year prior due to struggles with the sport. “I’m quite speechless to be honest,” he admitted.
This victory in Krugersdorp marked Van der Merwe’s fourth professional win, including victories on other circuits, but he emphasized that this achievement stands out above the rest. “I definitely felt the nerves coming in, and to perform under that amount of pressure, I’m just proud of how I played,” he remarked. With this win, he now ranks third on the Betway Big Easy Tour leaderboard after five tournaments.
Given his recent performance and consistency, Van der Merwe appears well-positioned for a successful season, with hopes of earning a season card for the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour season as one of the top 12 players on the Order of Merit.
