Thailand's golf sensation, Atthaya Thitikul, eyes a comeback next month in Arizona after being sidelined the entire season due to a left thumb tendon injury, according to her agent's statement to Golfweek on Monday.
The 21-year-old golfer had an impressive 2022, briefly holding the world No. 1 ranking and securing the LPGA Tour rookie of the year accolade.
Notably, she clinched the Vare Trophy last year for the lowest scoring average on tour. However, her current injury prevented her from participating in her home country's recent event, where Patty Tavatanakit emerged victorious at the Honda LPGA Thailand in Chonburi.
Thitikul's agent disclosed that the six- to eight-week recovery timeframe positions her for a potential return to the tour at the Ford Championship in Gilbert, Arizona, scheduled for March 28-31.
The golfer boasts two wins on the tour, both achieved in 2022 at the JTBC Classic and Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, both secured through playoff victories. In an unusual twist, she earned the 2023 Vare Trophy without winning a tournament, marking a historic feat in the trophy's 70-year history.
Reflecting on her unexpected Vare Trophy win, Thitikul expressed her happiness at overcoming a mid-season slump, admitting to struggling with confidence during that period. Her determination and resilience allowed her to bounce back and secure the prestigious award at the CME Group Tour Championship, showcasing her ability to overcome challenges in her flourishing golf career.
