Golf Icon Bernhard Langer Prepares for Farewell at BMW International Open

Posted : 03 July 2024

Bernhard Langer, a golf legend with two Masters titles and the inaugural world No. 1, prepares for his final European Tour appearance at the BMW International Open in Munich, starting Thursday. The 66-year-old German, who debuted on the tour in 1974 and boasts 42 titles spanning five decades, including victories that rival only Severiano Ballesteros' record, anticipates a mix of emotions as he approaches his 513th and last tournament.

Reflecting on his impending farewell, Langer admitted uncertainty about his emotions, acknowledging this farewell as a novel experience in his golfing career. Originally set to bid adieu at this year's Masters, Langer had to withdraw due to an Achilles tendon tear but now feels hopeful about his recovery and readiness for this final tour event.

Despite ongoing physical challenges, Langer remains determined, noting improvements in his condition as he prepares to compete on familiar grounds, just 45 minutes from his childhood home. Aware of the course's increased length since his last BMW appearance in 2012, Langer faces the challenge head-on, mindful of his own physical limitations but optimistic about the support from the home crowd.

Having made history as the first official world No. 1 and securing a record-breaking career on the PGA Tour Champions, where he surpassed Hale Irwin's victory tally, Langer's legacy in golf is profound. As he tees off alongside fellow Germans Martin Kaymer and Marcel Siem, Langer aims to make his mark once more, cherishing the opportunity to compete before his loyal fans in Munich.
