Giro d'Italia 2024: Route unveiled with reduced stage lengths and thrilling challenges
Posted : 14 October 2023
Inspired by the approach of the other two major cycling Grand Tours, the Giro d'Italia race organizers have revealed their intention to reduce the average length of stages for the 2024 edition, with most stages targeting a distance around 170km. Nevertheless, winning this edition will be a formidable challenge, given the numerous climbs to conquer and the inclusion of two sprint stages.
The official route for the 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia, set to take place in 2024, was unveiled last Friday. Organizers RCS Sport have incorporated two individual time trials into the route. Additionally, Stage 6 features a 12km Strade Bianche gravel section, and the tour includes six demanding mountain-top finishes.
The commencement of the first Grand Tour of the next season is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, starting in Turin and concluding with a circuit around the Colosseum in Rome on Sunday, May 26. Spanning three weeks of intense competition, the organizers have chosen to align with the strategy of other Grand Tours by reducing the average stage length. Most stages hover around the 170km range, with only four stages extending beyond 200km.
The route unveiling took place in Trento, Italy, with the presence of notable figures like the 2023 winner Primoz Roglic, Jai Hindley, Filippo Ganna, Peter Sagan, and Vincenzo Nibali.
Umbria will host Stage 7, while Stage 14 will take place in the vicinity of Lake Garda, serving as the setting for the two time trials. The mountain stages are strategically positioned near the start of the tour, including Stage 2 leading to Oropa, as well as the challenging routes on Stage 8 and Stage 10.
In the last week of the tour, Stage 15 will ascend to a remarkable height of 2,385 meters in Livigno, with the tour briefly venturing into Switzerland. At the Passo dello Stelvio, the 2024 tour reaches its highest point, soaring to 2,758 meters. Stage 17 will pose several daunting climbs, featuring a double-climb stage at Monte Grappa in Veneto, offering a demanding ascent and equally challenging descent.
The grand finale will unfold in the capital city of Rome, where the victor will be officially crowned.
