Ghana’s Vincent Torgah has emerged as the overall winner of the inaugural Rowland Adewumi Golf Classic held at the prestigious IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
Torgah, representing Tema Golf Club, clinched the championship with a gross score of 219, surpassing his closest rival, Godwin Okoko of IBB Golf Club.
Sunday Olapade from Ikoyi Golf Club finished third with a gross score of 222 over 54 holes, in this highly competitive three-day classic organized to celebrate the 50th birthday of the sponsor, Dr. Rowland Adewumi.
In the Ladies' category, Racheal Danjuma took the top spot with a gross score of 256, ahead of Amina Wilfred and Bola Mustapaha Bola who secured second and third places respectively.
In the Senior Professional category, Liman Muhammed claimed first place with a gross score of 232, followed by Agwom Luka and Lasisi Lateef in second and third places.
A delighted Torgah, upon receiving his winner's trophy and prize money, expressed his satisfaction with the flawless organization of the tournament.
He praised the organizers and participants for demonstrating a high level of professionalism, and called for more such tournaments across the West African region.
"It wasn't easy; it was tough and highly competitive. We gave our best to elevate the game to the highest level," he said.
"I was a bit nervous at the start because I didn't know the caliber of competitors, but I quickly adjusted and found it enjoyable.
"After a few mistakes, I bounced back strongly, and thanks to God, I emerged victorious.
"I believe we need more tournaments like this across West Africa to further develop the sport," he concluded.
The tournament, which kicked off on Thursday, concluded in spectacular fashion on Saturday with a dinner where prizes totaling N20 million in cash and items were awarded to winners across various categories.
Cash donations were also made to several orphanages in Abuja to support their activities.
