Genesis Scottish Open Day 3: Sam Burns defies gravity in third round bunker
Posted : 15 July 2023
During the third round of the Genesis Scottish Open, golfer Sam Burns encountered the infamous pot bunker, a common feature in links golf courses.
His tee shot at the par-5 10th hole at The Renaissance Club landed in the sand, and in his attempt to escape and get back into play, his second shot hit the classic riveted face of the bunker, defying gravity, and ended up on the edge of the vertical bunker face.
The situation sparked a debate among Burns, his playing partners Byeong Hun An and Brian Harman, and multiple rules officials from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. The question was whether the top layer of sod that lined the bunker would interfere with Burns' intended swing.
After careful consideration, it was determined that the top layer of sod was still part of the bunker, and therefore, no relief was granted to the 26-year-old.
Burns tried to play from this challenging position, but the ball rolled back into the bunker behind him. It took him three more shots to finally get out of the sand, resulting in a triple-bogey 8 on that hole.
Despite the setback, he managed to recover with two birdies on the back nine, finishing the round with a 1-over 71, six strokes behind the leader heading into Sunday's final round.
