Posted : 07 October 2023

France secured the top spot in Pool A at the World Cup with an impressive 60-7 victory over Italy. The hosts faced the possibility of elimination but quickly dispelled any doubts by scoring 31 unanswered points in the first half, ultimately tallying eight tries for a bonus-point win. This unbeaten performance in the group stage places France ahead of New Zealand in the rankings.

Captain Charles Ollivon expressed their determination, saying, "Four games, four wins. This was an elimination match for us, we had no right to make mistakes." France's relentless intensity and focus on the game were evident throughout the full 80 minutes, setting a positive tone for the next stage.

The match began with a swift try by Damian Penaud, showcasing France's strength and speed. Full-back Thomas Ramos contributed significantly with precise conversions and a penalty from halfway. Louis Bielle-Biarrey's try, a result of a perfect chip from Penaud, demonstrated the team's agility and coordination.

France secured the bonus point before halftime, with Penaud scoring his second try after a brilliant kick by Matthieu Jalibert. The second half saw Jalibert and hooker Peato Mauvaka adding to the tally with impressive tries. Replacement back Yoram Moefana sealed the victory with two more tries, highlighting France's exceptional teamwork.

Italy's lone consolation came from Manuel Zuliani, as they struggled to match France's superior performance. Italy's coach, Kieran Crowley, acknowledged the undeniable strength of the French team and the overwhelming support they enjoyed from the fans.
