France delivered a dominant performance against Italy, scoring 11 tries in a record-breaking Six Nations clash to set up a potential title-deciding showdown with Ireland. The match saw a total of 14 tries, surpassing the previous championship record of 12, while France’s 73 points marked their highest-ever score in the tournament.
Italy struck first through Tommaso Menoncello, but France quickly regained control with tries from Mickael Guillard, Peato Mauvaka, and captain Antoine Dupont. Ignacio Brex briefly revived Italy’s hopes, but Paul Boudehent’s powerful finish and Leo Barre’s try extended France’s lead in a thrilling first half.
France maintained their relentless attack in the second half, adding further tries through Gregory Alldritt, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, and Dupont. Despite Paolo Garbisi securing Italy’s third try, France continued to pile on the points, with Barre, Theo Attissogbe, and Pierre-Louis Barassi all crossing the line.
Their 73 points stand as the second-highest total by any team in a Six Nations match, behind England’s 80-point haul against Italy in 2001. The victory keeps France within three points of leaders Ireland, intensifying the anticipation for their upcoming clash in Dublin.
With the championship still within reach, Fabien Galthie’s men must now prepare for a crucial encounter against Ireland on 8 March, where a win could see them take the lead in the title race due to their superior points difference.
Meanwhile, Italy will look to bounce back when they face England at Allianz Stadium on 9 March. France’s emphatic win not only boosts their confidence but also ensures their championship hopes remain very much alive heading into the decisive stages of the tournament.
